The Hoggard NJROTC unit is one of the oldest Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs in the country designated by the Secretary of the Navy on the 19th day of April, 1968. The Navy JROTC unit at Hoggard High School is of company size with over 100 cadets. The unit is under the supervision of Naval Science Instructors Captain Stoney Mitchell, USN-R, and SSgt Richard Guichardo, USMC-R.
The John T Hoggard NJROTC unit is located within Area 7 of the Navy Educational Services and Training Command under Captain Jerry Hupp, USN-R. Hoggard's NJROTC company is dedicated to community service in the greater Wilmington area and instilling in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. NJROTC's purpose is not to recruit for the military, however, for interested high school students, NJROTC will help develop capable future enlisted servicemen and adept officers in all branches of the United States Armed Forces.
The unit averages 1 field trip per month to various educational venues that include Revolutionary War and Civil War battlefields, the NC Aquarium, Maritime Museum, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and the battleship USS North Carolina. Hoggard enjoys a very close competition partnership with more than 8 other JROTC programs within a 20 mile radius, with especially close cooperation with our sister NJROTC program at Eugene Ashley High School just 8 miles away. Our Color Guard, Sword Team, Drill Team, and Community Service teams support multiple school, community, and high-visibility community service events annually.
